    Day Twenty Seven

These are three radiant words that a yogi continually reflects on:

    Sadhana, Aradhana, Prabhupathi

Sadhana is a daily spiritual discpline.

Aradhana is when that daily spiritual discipline becomes something that you want to do and the practice in and of itself gives great joy.

Prabhubati means “spouse of God.”  This is a stage of atunement to the super-consciousness.  Everything is experienced as harmony even if the gross ourward circumstance seems challenging or disastrous.  A person feels more of the pain of the entire cosmos, and more of its joy, but rests in the neutral, sublime state of mind in the mastery of the Beloved Creator.  Compassion gives one a capactiy to forgive the unforgivable.

May I be humble and alert in my observation of my own consciousness through its relationship to the process of Sadhana, Aradhana, and Prabhubati.

    Day Twenty Six

This February I will delve into further yoga studies and practice by enrolling in a course called “Vitality and Stress” at Yoga West in Los Angeles.  The coordinators of the program have sent me some preliminary materials to get me eager for the course.  Within those materials there is a beautiful affirmation that I have memorized and have been repeating.  I hope this affirmation may serve you in some way, dear Friend.

I cultivate my core vitality to honor and use the opportunities that come with each breath–to receive them as a gift.  I recognize the value of my physical and energetic bodies and take steps to maintain them.  I thrive under stress and challenge; I am a spritiual warrior who leads, uplifts, and delivers effective decisions.  I practice a lifestyle that incorporates continuous habits that cultivate vitality and victory.  I have the mental and spiritual endurance to cross every crisis and be a beacon to navigate and excel in the Aquarian age.

Every breath offers us opportunities to choose thoughts, to speak words, to sing songs that support our radiance.  May we continue to focus our core vitality on choosing thoughs that support our radiance.  May we continue to focus our core vitality on speaking words that support our radiance.  May we continue to focus our core vitality on singing songs that support our radiance.  Oh, dear radiant ones, let us please keep this planet vibrating on the frequency of love and royal courage.

    Day Twenty Three

The universe adores repetition.  So do I.

One simple truth a yogi learns from chanting mantra is how powerful words are when they are repeated over and over.  Words gain power through repetition.  Something can manifest into being simply because its name, its word, is repeated over and over and over and over.

I’ve been chanting the Ik Acharee Chand mantra so much that I caught my six-year-old daughter repeating it while we were driving over the Bay Bridge into Coronado over the weekend.  I joined in with her chanting, and we chanted nonstop through the whole twenty minute car ride.  Wind was blowing our hair.  Sun was shining on our faces.  We were looking out beyond the bay to the expansive horizon of the Pacific Ocean, and we were chanting with glee:

Ajai Alai Abhai Abai Abhoo Ajoo Anaas Akaas Aganj Abhanj Alakh Abhakh Akaal Dyaal Alaykh Abhaykh Anaam Akaam Agaahaa Adaahaa Anaathay Pramaathay Ajonee Amonee Na Raagay Na Rangay Na Roopay Na Raykay Akaramang Abharamang Aganjay Alaykhay

My whole being beams delight savoring this moment of spontaneous chanting with a joyful child.  I suppose we just never know when Beloved Creation is going to surprise us with Its unspeakable happiness.  May the intense sweetness and delight I experienced in this moment expand, extend, and repeat itself into every being that I have ever touched and every being I will encounter in all my days!

    Question for reflection:

How can I write, speak, and think in such a way as to acknowledge and bless the blaze of light that is in every word?

    Day Twenty Two

The purpose of this 40-day meditation and writing project was to help me refine my relationship to words.  I dove into this practice with the notion that I would be luxuriating in sacred words and their beauty.  I should have known that the practice would lead to confronting my consciousness and challenging the very foundations upon which I have based my life-long love affair with words.  I have lived my life as an American who has internalized the American value of the freedom of expression, but my practice over these past 22 days has led me to a radical shift in my understanding of the value of “freedom of expression.”  This is surprising to me and somthing I look forward to diving into more deeply.

Thanks to Lorin Roche, who encourages readers of The Radiance Sutras to write their own sutras, my personal sutras came to me this morning as I was meditating in the wee hours.

These sutras do not come from me but through me.  They are not mine alone but belong to the universe.  I am less an author of them than I am someone who has discovered them.

Sutra is a sanskrit word that means “string” or “thread.”  A list of sutras are aphorisms that provide guidance.  The idea is to repeat the sutras and meditate on them to forge a relationship with them and see how their truth weaves into your life and your being.

Here are seven sutras that can be used to guide a mindful practice of using words consciously.

Free Speech Yoga Sutras for Word Lovers

    1.  Speak words as if whatever you speak must  happen.

    2. You have great skill at speaking to inform, try speaking to uplift.

    3. Words are worlds, and words create and destroy worlds.

    4. You are skilled at speaking your mind, try speaking your soul.

    5. Upholding freedom of expression may be less essential nowadays than upholding truth of expression.

    6. Words are organic beings, use them so as to bless them.

    7. Free speech can also mean observing silence so that words can be liberated from humans’ misuse of their power.

    Day Twenty One

Yogi Bhajan gave us five sutras, short teachings to be remembered and repeated, to uphold expansive consciousness for the Aquarian Age.  Today I want to repeat and meditate on the fifth sutra.

Vibrate the cosmos, and the cosmos shall clear the path.

May I align my intentions and actions with the stars, with collective creative consciousness, with Creation’s Benevolent Will, and with my own will in order to uplift myself and others.  May I simply sit and meditate and feel the shifts in my body, mind, and spirit as the gentle, sweet guidance from the All Radiant Source.

On January 26th, Saturn will move from Scorpio to Sagittarius.  I am not a yogi who claims to be well-versed in astrology, but I like to listen to some vedic astrological guidance now and then.  What I know about Saturn is that its energy connects with our consiousness in the realms of channeling emotion into devotion.  Saturn is a task master who teaches us patience, perseverence, discipline, and service.  These days leading up to and following January 26th will be a wonderful time to experience patience and to serve others.

    Day Twenty

    Breathe.

On the inhalation,  draw energy in extra slowly and deeply.  Allow this inhale to be an expression of curiosity, a quiet investigation into the fragrance of Kindness.  On the exhalation, release a long, extra slow breath.  Allow this exhale to be a gentle expression of the power of your Heart.

    Smile.

    Breathe.

Inhale slowly and allow this breath to be an expression of reverence, a silent celebration of your whole being.  On the exhalation, release a long, extra slow breath.  Allow this exhale to be an offering of your support to all that you love and hold dear.

    Pause.

    Smile more.

    Breathe.

On this inhalation, breathe extra slowly and deeply.  Allow this breath to be an expression of your tenderness, an expansive merging into the wisdom of All That Is Gentle.  On the exhalation, release a long, extra slow breath as an expression of your sincere Heart.

    Pause.

    Smile more.

    Pause.

Continue to breathe and pause and smile.  Celebrate your smile, and please continue to share it!

    Beloved Ones, you are radiant!

    Day Nineteen

These are the words of the Ik Acharee Chand or “Ajai Alai” mantra translated into English:

Invincible, indestructible, fearless, unchanging, unformed, unborn, imperishable, ethereal, unbreakable, impenetrable, undying, merciful, indescribable, un-costumed, nameless, desire-less, unfathomable, incorruptible, un-mastered, destroyer, beyond birth, beyond silence, beyond love, beyond color, beyond form, beyond shape, beyond karma, beyond doubt, unconquerable, indescribable.

I have been chanting these words in Gurmukhi for weeks now, both aloud and echoing them through my thoughts.  These are sacred words, radiant words.  Though they come from a particular religious tradition, I consider myself simply a yogi.  I humbly embrace all randiant words that may serve to guide higher consciousness.

Today many women will march.  And though they may not be chanting these words aloud, may these words of the Ik Acharee Chand mantra march with them.  May these words surround every action we can take to assure the rights and dignity of all beings everywhere.  May these words echo through the subtle realm to assure that we continue to grow and expand our human consciousness to become more and more aware of steps we can take to create a loving and peaceful universe.

    Day Eighteen

    Beloved Friend,

Please try to recall the sound you heard when you were cozy within your mother’s womb–the infinite repetition of lub dub lub dub lub dub–the ceaseless pulse of Mother Love.  The ceaseless pulse of mother love permeates our being no matter what we endure.  I hope you hear the pulse and it reminds you to dwell in your own unique expression of fearless endurance.

Put the pulse of infinite love into your fierce radiance!  Repeat these words from The Radiance Sutras:

The heart of the universe pulses in all hearts; there is One who is the life in all forms.  There is One who is joyful in simply existing–in all bodies, as all bodies.  Explore the life that is the life of your present form.  One day you will discover it is no difference from the life of the Secret One, and your heart will sing triumphant songs of being at home everywehre.

May you feel at home in your own skin and everywhere; may you delight in the sound of your own voice; may you celebrate every thing about you that is an expression of the Secret One.  May we keep the soothing rhythm of Mother Love in our thoughts; may we honor and respect every one Mama Love.  And if we should fail to keep our attention fixed fast on Love, may we be guided back home by the enduring heartbeat of the Secret One.
